On Saturday, October 17th, The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force will present the 2009 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award to MDGLCC President Steve Adkins. Steve Adkins has been a major supporter and enabler of local LGBT organizations. He has played an important role in promoting LGBT-friendly businesses and educating local leaders about LGBT workplace issues. We invite you to join us as we recognize his contributions to the LGBT community at this 2009 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award event.
The 2009 Eddy McIntyre Community Service Award event includes a dinner, which is an important fundraiser for the LGBT community. One-third of the proceeds from the Miami events dinner are donated to the Task Force. The LGBT Task Force played a major role in protecting Miami-Dade’s Human Rights Ordinance by contributing more financial and human resources than any other national organization. The remaining two-thirds of the Miami events proceeds will go to the Dade Community Foundation’s GLBT Community Projects Fund. In return, the Foundation presents grants to Miami-Dade LGBT service organizations including Youth Services, Pridelines, Switchboard of Miami and Miami Beach Gay Pride. Over the last four years, about $800,000 has been returned to the local community.
To become one of the Miami events sponsors, to endorse a particular part of the event or reserve a table, visit www.theTaskForce.org/miami. Pledges received by August 27th will be noted on the Miami events invitations.

Last month, a bipartisan group of the U.S. representatives introduced legislation that would prevent workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. In matters regarding the workplace, men and women should be judged solely on the basis of job performance.
Most people think it is a given that it is illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity, but it is legal to do so based on sexual orientation in 30 states and based on gender identity in 38 states.
Federal law protects against employment discrimination based on race, sex, religion, national origin, age and disability. In 2007, the House passed an Employment Non-Discrimination Act that protected on the basis of sexual orientation but not gender identity. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen says that though many local governments have similar laws, ENDA is needed on a Federal level. Get support and updates from sites such as GayMiamiBeachTravel.com.

Broward County’s first gay-themed library officially opened in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, just one day before the GLBT literary Festival. The library, called Stonewall Library and Archives, will host the Gay and Lesbian Literary Arts Festival on Friday and Saturday. Stonewall derived its name from the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York that paved the way for the modern gay rights movement. Stonewall Library shares a building with a county library and sits on the edge of a park where children play and seniors gather. With about 20,000 books and movies, Stonewall is the largest independent gay-themed library. The library evolved from a group of college students who exchanged books to an incorporated non-profit functioning out of a small closet in a church to where it is now, a 4,200 square-foot space. Visitors must be 18 to access the materials. The library has T-shirts showing different gay rights causes and a wall depicting a timeline of the gay rights movement. This new gay-themed library is located at 1300 Sunrise Blvd.
